A guide to Airtel GPRS And Airtel GPRS Configuration Settings
about Mobiles on 25/10/2008 - like it?

I get quite a lot of mails asking about Airtel’s GPRS services and their settings, so I thought I’ll post this here.

First things, you should know that Airtel provides 3 types of GPRS services:

  • Airtel Live
  • Airtel NOP (or Net On Phone)
  • Airtel Mobile Office

So what’s the differences between them ?

  1. Airtel Live – Airtel Live is the so-called “free” GPRS service. Free in the sense that there are no monthly rentals. You get access ONLY to their Airtel Live portal, where you can download some wallpapers, games, ringtones etc. Note that EXCEPT when explicitly mentioned, these downloads ARE NOT free, and will be charged. Majority of the time, Airtel Live will be activated free of cost, and people start exploring and downloading these games and then wonder why their balance has gone low. Now you know why. There have been instances (has happened to my sister) where just opening Airtel Live Portal has resulted in dwindling of balance/credit.
  2. Airtel Net-on-Phone (or NOP)This is my preferred way of GPRS. You have to pay a rental of Rs.5 a day for pre-paid, or RS 99 a month for post paid. There are NO charges for browsing, downloading(provided you download games, ringtones from free sites like getjar) and the speed- its reasonably okay. What makes NOP a killer is that its reasonably priced, and you get access to ALL sites. There’re couple of downsides though, such as blocking of ports – essentially this means that only Port 80 is open(so that your web browser can communicate), and most other ports are blocked – so you cannot make use of your phone’s Email client, Instant messenger etc. Other bad part is that you cannot use your Phone as a modem on this plan. Also I’ve been told that for some circles like Maharashtra, Goa, NOP has been discontinued. I hope they don’t discontinue it in Chennai circle. It’ll be huge loss for me! (Update: This plan is now cancelled.)
  3. Airtel Mobile Office: The big daddy of GPRS services – Mobile is same as that of Net on Phone, except that it’s charged at Rs 15/day for pre-paid users. Postpaid users – I think its like Rs 650 a month for 1GB of usage – there’s no Unlimited plan(a huge deal breaker for me) (update: the tariff now is Rs/ 98 per month w/ a datacap of 2GB, anything over is something on the lines of 3op/10KB). UNLIKE the Net-on-Phone plan, all of the ports are open – so you’re free to use an application of your choice, and they’ll work fine. This plan also allows you to use your phone as a modem, for those emergency-need-to-get-online-ASAP situations.

With a little introduction, lets have a look at configuration and settings.

First, this assumes that you’ve already activated GPRS. If not, call up customer care(dial 121 from your cellphone) and ask them to activate GPRS. It should be activated within 5 minutes, and you should get the settings soon.

However for some phones the settings might not be accepted, you’ll have to enter them manually.

So in your phone, just search for a settings -> Internet/Data accounts -> Create a new account.

Enter the following details:

Name: Just give a name of your choice

Address or access point or APN: This is a critical one. The 3 services have different access points.

  • For Airtel Live: airtelfun.com
  • For Airtel Net-On-Phone(NOP): airtelwap.com
  • For Airtel Mobile Office: airtelgprs.com

Username: Leave it blank

Password: Leave it blank

Next search for Proxy server option, and enter the following details

Proxy server address/IP: 100.1.200.99

Proxy server Port: 8080

Do note that Proxy details are require ONLY FOR Airtel Live and Airtel NOP, Mobile Office doesn’t require any proxies.

That’s it! Save the settings, restart your phone(this is a must) and start surfing!

80 comments - really? way cool!

AirTel Mobile Office is really a strange service as per rate is concern.

In Kolkata its Rs. 498/- (pre-paid) for unlimited usage and speeds are pretty good with around 20 to 25 kilo bites per seconds with any EDGE class 32 based phone !!!

In Hariaya, its Rs. 225/- for the same plan.

In Mumbai, they pay around Rs. 15/- a day with no unlimited plan !!

The most surprising this is, that every where it comes with Free Roaming, meaning I can buy a Hariya SIM card and keep using it in Mumbai / Chennai / Kolkata or anywhere I want.

With the help of easy recharge, I can recharge it any where in India with the same amount of my circle !!

I am sorry, its Hariyana.

Written by Choto Cheeta on 26/10/2008

Interesting thoughts there, don’t know why there’s this disparity in the tariffs though.
BTW the get SIM from Hariyana plan is..interesting :D

And yes thanks for the comment and dropping by my blog :)

Hi
The scene has changed a bit now.

Airtel has hiked the GPRS monthly pack charge all across the nation. i am in kerala, here it used to be 274 a month or 1999 a year, almost a year ago. They hiked it to 374 a month few months ago, and the latest announcement says, the ‘next recharge of 374 will be only valid for 15 days, for 1 month GPRS, please recharge with 674 rupees’. I enquired about other circles, the situation is same, ex 999 a month in west bengal and likewise.

back in 2002-03 i used to use the airtel gprs service for free in punjab. it was officially free, not the sporadic hack methods which kept popping sometime or the other.

Now the point is, i am getting second thoughts about airtel, i used to use it as a modem and leech it to max with 24KB/s speeds, but now paying close to 1k for internet on phone – “ye baat kuchh hazam nahee hui”.

Hi Kumar Gautam!
Thanks for dropping by my blog! Well I see that they’ve made the plans more or less uniform. I remember back in 2003-2004 I used to surf for free, then they started blocking. Even then with those “hacks” I kept accessing the net. But yes now its going beyond reasonably priced. A shame I say,so much potential.
Sorry for the late reply.

Hi,

I am using Samsung Monte (S5620) with Airtel connection. All applicaitons in the phone are working perfect on Airtel Mobile Office as AP except Google Maps. When I try to connect Google maps it says “data connection lost and says something like visit http://www.google.com/gmm/configure.html“. I visited this location in vain. Google maps works perfect with Wifi.
Airetel customer service did not help me in this.. they just asked me to approach Samsung and Google.. thats easy isnt it….
Can anyone help?

how do i proceed to connect??? pl. help

Written by anand on 28/08/2011

@anand You don’t need to provide the Proxy server details. For the iPad you’ll need a Mobile Office plan.

Written by sathya on 28/08/2011

@Tushar Call customer care. Also, please don’t use ALL CAPS, it’s equivalent to shouting.

Written by sathya on 28/08/2011

I do have a mobile office plan, unfortunately, when I went to USA, I turned the cellular data off, as I had acess to wi-fi everywhere and the cellular would have been unnecessarily expensive, on coming back to Inda I switched off the wireless and kept cellur on but did not see thelogo of airtel as i should see when connected to cellular.

Now I removed the mini card and cleaned it and put it back and it is WORKING!!!, guess it got little askew, as they cut the card and it was not a mini card.
many thks for your prompt reply will keep in touch for future problems

If you’re still facing problems please contact customer care.

I activated the Rs.30/- NOP plan on my Airtel number thru *567# and then proceeded to use the internet. Shockingly, my balance was still being deducted. And that too around 20 bucks while i was just testing the connection. Called 12118, they had no answers so they referred me to the costumer care representatives at 198. The rep there had no answer as well and forwarded the call to a senior rep. And that guy jst repeatedly told me i had no settings installed even though I had received a msg on activation of NOP that the settings were already installed. The guy just disconnected without solving the problem. I just dnt knw what to do now!! I’m so frustrated!!

And this is the third time my balance has been deducted without any reason whatsoever- Rs.80/- once and Rs.24/- the second time around…
