Heading back to Austin

Well, I’m heading back to Austin for a second stint. Had an amazing time the last time I was there – was there for almost a year. Learnt a lot – technically & otherwise. Unlike last time when I had a flight from Chennai to Mumbai and then a direct Mumbai to New Jersey flight ( with a Mumbai International Airport to boot) – this time, the flight will be from Chennai.

The route would be Chennai – Doha – Washington – Austin. Worst part about this journey is that flight takes off at 04:45, and I would have to reach there by atleast 2AM – which means – Goodbye sleep. Will be reaching Doha by 06:45 for a 2 hour stopover. The connecting flight leaves Doha at 09:00 and would reach Washington at 16:00. The final flight to Austin is set to depart at 18:50. I’m a little worried about this difference – I’m not sure if this difference is enough for me to finish off the formalities – especially the immigration part. Lets see how it goes. Hope it will not be anything like the last trip!

Back In India

Yeah, I’m back in India. Well, actually landed in Chennai long time [ damn it’s been more than a month o_0 ]. So let me recap what’s been happening and what I’ve bene upto.

First thing: the return trip. The return flight was rather uneventful, nowhere near how my flight from Mumbai to Austin was ( well, that’s a good thing).

My flight itself was rather long ( heck what do ya expect from a transcontinental flight anyway), covering 4 different flights – American Airlines from Austin to Chicago, and from Chicago to New York  and Jet Airways from New York to Brussels (stop over) and from Brussels to Chennai.

Yes I’m alive!

It’s been  a while hasn’t it, since I last blogged ? *goes to next tab to check last manual blog post* April 19. God! Hadn’t realized its been so long since I last composed. Yes, I’m alive (hey you’re reading this aren’t ya?). I can hear the collective yells of “where the hell have you been”. Well – work. Been drowned, swamped, overloaded – basically been busy with shit loads of work.

Next question – Am I in Austin ?

3 Months… And More to Come!

Its been a while since I’ve posted (crap nearly a month) on my blog – so what have I been upto and what’s happening ?
For starters, work, work, work, more work – did I mention work ? There’s just 2 people here in Austin for the project I’m with and as we hit the project go live date, there’s tons of work to be doing – and the 2 of us are just about struggling. My colleague being the Business Analyst & Implementer -means that he’s got to report to his managers about what’s going on and and analysis of bug reports, calls resolved etc. That leaves him busy – and leaves me with a frikkin’ huge set of things to do – test the test conditions in advance and report any bugs found.

A Visit to North By NorthWest

The day I landed in Austin, when I was being driven back, I’d seen this seemingly nice place – North by North West and my colleague told me its a beer brewery and restaurant, and I made a mental note to check it out. Somehow I never checked it out – till today. Yesterday while heading out to Bank of America to encash my Travellers’ Cheque I noticed that North by NorthWest is pretty close and walking distance from where I stay, so I decided to check this place out.

“Hi I’m SJ”

You know very few people know my full name. Most people call me as “Sathya”, my twittter friends “SathyaBhat”. Mainly that’d would because I’ve never mentioned it – not because of “privacy reasons” or I have a name which would cause certain problems – its just that it’s sorta too long – I mean who wouldn’t prefer calling “Sathya” to “Sathyajith Bhat?”.

Now that I’m here in US – I’ve had to further shorten my name. I mean I didn’t expect people to pronounce “Sathyajith” (trust me they tried, tried and were like “Saaa– I give up??” ). Well people have had problems calling my shortened name “Sathya” – I mean here they ask your name for everything – whenever you other something at the restaurant etc,  and everytime I say “Sathya” people would be like “pardon me?”. So from Sathyajith Bhat to Sathyajith to SathyaBhat to Sathya – now its SJ.

My Black Friday Purchases
on 04/12/2008 - like it?

“Black Friday” in US is the day after Thanksgiving day. On this single day you get the best deals – flat discounts, and unbelievable prices. There’s a catch though, the best deals are available real early – I mean as early 5 AM – people are known to camp the night out just to grab them. While my colleague and me went to the mall relatively late at 7:30 I still got some nice deals.

Experience of a Lifetime – The Mumbai Austin Flight
on 22/11/2008 - like it?

I’ve been in couple of flights before but this would be my first International, Intercontinental flight. As in my previous post, the flight was scheduled to depart at 23:40 from Mumbai on Nov 20 and arrive in Newark, New Jersey at 05:25 AM. And then the connecting flight from Newark, NJ to Austin, Texas was scheduled to leave at 07:15 and arrive in  Austin, Texas at 10:25. Like most other things, (surprise, surprise) this too didn’t as per plan.

Let me start from scratch.

Just a quick post. Got the dates for my trip to Austin. Leaving tomorrow, November 20th, at 15:15 for a Chennai -> Mumbai flight. 23:40 is the Mumbai -> New Jersey flight.

Finally, 08:00 New Jersey -> Austin flight.

Oh Aalaap just mentioned about a tweetup in Mumbai International Airport. Anyone coming?
