Statuatory Warning: LOT of curse words ahead. If you cant stand curse words, well then fuck you. My stay in Chennai is turning out to be one big lesson as to what kinda pricks and dumb fucks exist in this planet. First it was the Chennai Cops. Then it was the stupid mansion owner. Recently it was a stupid hotel cashier. Chalk up yet another dumb prick to that list courtesy yesterday night’s sequence of events.

I'm on Folding@Home

Yup, I’ve gotten into the Folding@Home brigade. Have always been into the whole distributed computation thingy, with my first experience being SETI@Home way back in 2000, when I first got my net connection. That net connection however was taken down soon(not thanks to my aunt coming down from the other side if the world and using it as an Always ON ADSL connection) meaning that my SETI@Home experiment came to a crashing halt 🙁

Celebrity Issues
· ☕ 3 min read · ✍️ Sathyajith Bhat

Being a mini “celebrity”  can be a problem. Now I’m no “celebrity”, but being a moderator of India’s biggest tech website forums, Tech2.o has its advantages…and drawbacks too. Some of the people who contact me on IM, just make me go =)) =)) =))

Case in point was the other day, while I was working, I get buzzed on IM. A guy asks me, “are you the moderator at tech2?”. I say “yes”. He tells me: ““prove it!!” I was like WTF?, and I go “Why should I?”. He then goes :“I KNOW YOU ARE LYING”. I then go “Ughhh, Ok, fine. I see no reason as to why I should “prove” you anything” . I’m like jeez what losers. Unfortunately I didnt have teh ENTIRE log of that conversation to share with you guys.

Enable/Disable AutoPlay For Individual Drives
· ☕ 1 min read · ✍️ Sathyajith Bhat

Windows' Autoplay is a neat feature - the moment you pop in a CD/Drive or a Removable drive, autorun.inf file is read, and any executable file mentioned in there is executed. While this seems as a good idea, say, for automated setup installers, Autoplay has gathered some infamy as a virus distribution centre.

With default settings, you can only disable or enable Autoplay totally, not for individual drives. So is there a way to enable Autoplay, say only for individual drives, say, CD Drive? Yes!

For that you’ll need Tweak UI, grab it from here. After installing, launch it.

Indian Work Culture ?

I keep getting this mail as a forward, and it’s contents reflect my views too. Have a look at the mail.

Mail sent by Narayan Murthy to all Infosys staff:

It’s half past 8 in the office but the lights are still on…
PCs still running, coffee machines still buzzing…
And who’s at work? Most of them ??? Take a closer look…

All or most specimens are ??
Something male species of the human race…

Look closer… again all or most of them are bachelors…

And why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!!
Any guesses???
Let’s ask one of them…
Here’s what he says… “What’s there 2 do after going home…Here we get to surf, AC, phone, food, coffee that is why I am working late…Importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!!”

BSNL EVDO To Be Available in Chennai only in Outer Peripheral Areas
· ☕ 1 min read · ✍️ Sathyajith Bhat

BSNL Chennai’s website may claim that EVDO connections are avaible, but the reality is that they’re offering connections only in outer peripheral areas. Sad as it may be but the news is true. I’d paid a visit to the Greames Road exchange in Chennai to apply for a EVDO connection. Initially I was thrilled to see the EVDO device infront of me, all my excitement died when I was informed that there’s no CDMA tower in Triplicane, nor there is one in city. I was told that at the moment, BSNL is focussing on EVDO connections(in Chennai, atleast) only in areas where standard wired connectivity is not possible - areas like Perungudy, OMR, Velachery etc.

Ever since I’d seen a preview Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 at GSMArena, I’ve been floored by that awesome device. The good folks at WMExperts have managed to get a unit of Xperia X1, and take it for a spin. Lets see what they have to say about the X1. WMExperts also had a chat with Martin Winlet, the Director of Global Marketing for Sony Ericsson and he also answered some questions people had put to him. Here are some excerpts from their article

The Idiotic Hotel Cashier
· ☕ 2 min read · ✍️ Sathyajith Bhat
Generally I always carry a fair amount of cash with me, coz I’m a bit paranoid as to what might happen if I’m stranded without cash. The set of incidents which happened just now will now ensure that I will always carry cash with me. I’d been to Hotel Balaji Woodlands for dinner - I don’t go there often, but have been there enough number of times to know that they *do* accept Debit cards.
